Music improves the quality of life-Lider of the Year: Transforming Lives Through Music with Christina Rodriguez-Coors Light Líder of the Year; President and Co-Founder, Mind & Melody, Inc. For more than a decade, the Coors Light Líderes program has recognized and highlighted the achievements of emerging Latino leaders through an online public voting competition, a national campaign and robust community outreach. Christina Rodriguez was named the 2018 Coors Light Líder of the Year and her award includes a $25,000 grant to Mind&Melody, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for those experiencing neurological impairments, such as Alzheimer’s, through music. Christina’s mission is to improve the quality of life for seniors in our community and her organization brings together musicians and volunteers of all ages to build intergenerational relationships with seniors. In addition, Mind&Melody developed student-lead chapters at FIU in Miami, FAU in Boca Raton and Jupiter, the University of Florida, and Florida State University to recruit volunteers and raise awareness. Some volunteers have joined the organization to share their love for music, others because of their medical interests as future physicians. They all bring a sense of joy and energy to the program and engage fellow students to be a part of the initiatives. Christina was among 12 Latino leaders nominated by local and national nonprofit organizations for their leadership and contributions to their communities. The program has also raised awareness and highlighted the achievements of emerging leaders within the Hispanic community by offering up-and-coming Latino professionals leadership tools, counsel and the opportunity to network.

James Kiley, Ph.D. Director, Division of Lung Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). One of the leading causes of death in the United States, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, affects millions of Americans. Beyond the 16 million who are diagnosed with the disease, millions more suffer with COPD-like symptoms and are likely unaware that they have it. While COPD affects people across the country, the burden is even higher in rural areas, where prevalence is almost double that of urban areas. The disease, which is expected to cost $49 billion a year on COPD-related care by 2020, can stifle a person’s ability to breathe, lead to long-term disability, and dramatically affect quality of life. Many mistake COPD’s steadily-worsening symptoms – shortness of breath, chronic coughing, and wheezing – for problems that naturally come with aging or being out of shape. As a result, many patients delay seeking a diagnosis. Over time, the lung disease can greatly impact one’s quality of life and ability to complete everyday tasks. However, COPD is highly treatable and early diagnosis can ease signs and symptoms and improve outcomes. On November 14th, Dr. James Kiley, Director of the Division of Lung Diseases at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will be available to discuss COPD – what it is, who’s at risk and how diagnosis and treatment can improve one’s quality of life.
