James Cottrell MD

James E. Cottrell, MD, FRCA, is a past president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and chairman emeritus and distinguished professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and the Gary and Sarah Sklar professor at SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn.
He is the coeditor of Anesthesia and Neurosurgery (Elsevier, now in its seventh edition, 2022) and Neuroanesthesia: Handbook of Clinical and Physiologic Essentials (Little, Brown, 1999), and the author of more than one hundred articles in medical journals, including the New
England Journal of Medicine and the Lancet. He was editor in chief of the Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology for twenty-five years. Cottrell served as a health policy adviser to Senator Edward M. Kennedy and the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources.
He was a founding member and former chair of the AIDS Action Foundation and is currently a regent for the University of the State of New York.
