Business Game Changers Radio with Sarah Westall: Has There Been an Orchestrated Attack on Free Speech and Independent Journalists?

“The First Amendment was designed to allow for disruption of business as usual. It is not a quite and subdued amendment or right.” Naomi Wolf
Freedom of speech is a right that we must be vigilant to maintain. This right is the cornerstone to maintaining a free society and must be protected. It is no doubt hard to defend when individuals spread hatred, fear, and other social ills. But, this is the price of freedom.
My father’s childhood friend and later college roommate was David Goldberger, the ACLU lawyer who famously defended the Nazis in the important landmark case; National Socialist Part of America v. Village of Skokie. Goldberger was the Jewish lawyer who, against the wishes of his mother, defended free speech for the most disliked group in America and perhaps the world at that time, the Nazis. Goldberger believed, and so did the ACLU, that freedom of speech belongs to everyone, not just to those you agree with. He was a true American Hero who, for the general good of the country, risked his personal relationships and risked being an outcast within his own community. Today we need that same courage to ensure our freedoms stay intact in the new communication age we find ourselves in.
My father has many stories about his friend David. He recalls a time in college when an obnoxious individual hung a burning cross to the outside of their dorm room in college. As explained by my father, it is actually quite a humorous tale. My dad, having a temper, caught the guy, lifted him up and threatened to beat him up. The beating may have occurred, but the man literally crapped his pants and ran away (this did happen). Now that’s a funny tale, but during that whole episode, David Goldberger remained calm. He had become accustomed to a certain level of harassment. Occurrences like this made his defense of the Nazis that much more incredible.
