Business Game Changers Radio with Sarah Westall: Debt, Corruption, and Political Gridlock: Can the U.S. Remain Globally Competitive Against China and the Rest of the World?

U.S. National Debt is over 19.5 trillion dollars and it’s growing at an incredible rate – see debt clock. It is now larger than the U.S. gross domestic product which sits at approximately at $18.5 trillion. It cannot continue to increase at this rate without the debt becoming unpayable and resulting in serious consequences.
Corruption is everywhere, not just in the United States. No society is immune from having dishonest, disloyal, greedy citizens and leaders. But every thriving society that maximizes the potential of its citizens has minimized corruption by targeting and destroying it. It’s simply mandatory for societies to flourish, yet, in the United States fighting corruption has taken a back seat to other agendas and priorities. This epidemic is undermining the security and future of our nation. There are countless examples and tragic consequences that have been documented over the past decade on this topic.
Political gridlock is at an unprecedented level in Washington. According to a report from the Brookings Institute, political gridlock is twice as prevalent as it was in 1950. It has become increasingly difficult for leaders to put meaningful legislation thru congress. The media is not helping as it has become just as polarized as the politicians in Washington. Without focused action on a shared vision, it will be extremely difficult to solve serious issues and to make meaningful progress towards important and necessary goals.
Global competition is heating up around the world. The United States still leads in higher education, medical innovation, nanotechnology, and military defense but other countries are catching up or bypassing the United States in many important areas. For example, China has overtaken the U.S. not only in GDP, but also in important industries such as manufacturing, supercomputing, and rare mineral mining and production. France leads the world in healthcare for its citizens, Japan in Robotics, and many other countries are excelling in niche industries.
With the challenges we are facing in the United States, how are we to remain competitive in an increasingly global competitive environment?
